PRO-ISRAEL CANDIDATE WINS FLORIDA SENATE SEAT: Florida’s outgoing Republican Governor, Rick Scott, on Sunday 18 Nov. 2018 defeated Democratic Senator Bill Nelson in the state’s Senate race that triggered two recounts. The contest came to an end on Sunday as a noon deadline passed for county election officials to submit the results of a hand recount . Shortly after the results came in, Scott released a statement saying Nelson had called to concede. Scott is a supporter of Israel and was in attendance for the opening ceremony when the USA embassy in Israel relocated to Jerusalem. Before President Donald Trump officially announced that he would be relocating the embassy, Scott was among those who called on the president to make good on his 2016 campaign promise to move the embassy. He has also spoken out against the Boycott, Divestment and Sanctions (BDS) movement working to delegitimize the Jewish state. “It’s disgusting that people think about doing that. Israel is a sovereign nation; Israel deserves to be respected like everybody else. There should be no anti-Semitism in the world. I’m going to do everything I can to stand with Israel.”
Scott will be replaced as Governor by another pro-Israel lawmaker, Ron DeSantis, who officially won the election on Saturday 17 Nov. 2018 when his Democratic rival, Andrew Gillum, conceded defeat. Last week, DeSantis told the Israel Hayom newspaper that his first overseas trip as governor of Florida will be to Israel and promised to be aggressive in the fight against the anti-Israel Boycott, Divestment and Sanctions (BDS) movement. During his time in the House of Representatives, DeSantis sponsored the 2013 Palestinian Accountability Act which called for the withholding of USA aid to the Palestinian Authority until the PA officially recognizes Israel as a Jewish state and cuts ties with the Gaza-based terror group Hamas. DeSantis promoted the relocation of the USA embassy in Israel from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem, saying that Americans were “excited to see the embassy move”. In 2017, DeSantis joined other lawmakers in forming the Congressional Israel Victory Caucus. KENTUCKY BECOMES 26TH STATE TO ENACT ANTI-BDS MEASURE: Kentucky became the 26th state last week to enact an anti-BDS measure (Boycott, Divestment and Sanctions), prohibiting awarding state contractors who partake in the anti-Israel movement. Republican Gov. Matt Bevin signed the executive order during a ceremony at the state’s capitol with Israeli Ambassador to the United States Ron Dermer. “The State of Israel is an important friend and trading partner to the Commonwealth,” said Bevin. “We will not allow state resources to benefit entities that intentionally engage in discriminatory practices to harm the sovereignty and economic prosperity of any ally nation. Today’s executive order makes it clear that Kentucky condemns the BDS movement and that we stand shoulder-to-shoulder with our friend, Israel.” Matthew Goldberg, director of community relations for the Jewish Federation of Louisville, remarked: “Boycotting Israel is immoral, as it specifically targets the only democracy in the Middle East, a staunch ally of the United States for decades. Everyone in the Commonwealth of Kentucky should be proud that we are now on record as officially opposing the demonization of Israel. In this executive order, Kentucky follows 25 other states in protecting its citizens from becoming de facto participants in discrimination and anti-Semitism.
